The Middle Rio Grande Development Council has launched its summer 2005 youthACES (youth: Academic and Career Enhancement for Success) recruitment effort. The summer program addresses summer employment opportunities that are directly linked to academic and occupational learning, basic skills training through experiences at a post-secondary institution, and leadership development.
The 2005 summer youthACES program will engage both in-school and out-of-school youth with activities directly related to the world of work or achieving a secondary education. Each age level participates in a developmentally appropriate activity that paves the road towards self-sufficiency.
Fifteen-year-old students who participated in the 2004 year-round program will be engaged in either basic skills or service learning components styled around the concept of volunteerism and service to the community. Students from around the region will be involved in diverse projects which may include video productions for their community, providing their services to different community organizations, raising funds to contribute to worthy causes, or developing studies of their community to highlight needs.
Sixteen to twenty-one year-olds will be involved in either Career Academy, or Work Experience/Limited Internship activities. This aspect of the program links students' Career Interests to the world of Work. Both in-school and out-of-school youth will be served through this component. The main emphasis of the new sub-component of the employment component is the inclusion of out-of-school youth who will not only be engaged in a summer employment program, but they will also continue to be served after the summer experience with WIA training dollars. These youth will be guided towards a definition of their chosen career paths and subsequently aligned with a two year vocational program.
All summer employment participants will be placed at a work-site that reflects their interests and they will work, learn, and earn while experiencing the rigors of the world of work.
Graduating seniors who meet WIA eligibility criteria - who pass at least two portions of the THEA (Texas Higher Education Assessment) or who are exempt from taking the THEA because of their scores - are eligible to participate in the College Bound program. The credits they earn while attending college in the summer will count toward their graduation should they choose to continue their education at the colleges and universities selected for the program.
All students participating in the youthACES 2005 program must be income eligible. The table to the right lists the current income levels based on family size.
Please contact your local Workforce Center to determine if slots are available and if you are eligible to participate.
