The nation's premier employment and training program for eligible individuals. The program is federally funded and available at no additional cost to employers and workers. WIA offers unique programs and services to both youth and adults, including:
CHOICES/TANF Recipients:
Offers services for applicants and recipients of Temporary and Needy Family (TANF) (once known as Aid to Dependent Children) services and prepares them for employment through an immediate immersion into the world of work and the labor market via:
Food Stamp Employment & Training (FSE&T):
Assists TANF recipients in obtaining employment, including entering employment and training activities that will promote long-term self-sufficiency:
Employment Services:
Provided free of charge, and are designed to bring together workers and employers. Workforce Center staff assist customers in searching through available job openings and making referrals. The staff also provides Job Search Seminars to teach job seekers how to find jobs ontheir own and how to prepare for interviews:
Child Care Provider Services:
GED Classes - The GED classes are sponsored through the Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC). There is an instructor and aide to assist in instruction and guidance. Exams are given in Uvalde at the Southwest Texas Junior College main campus (address), and are $8.00 per exam with a registration fee of $22.00. The total fee for all the GED exams is $62.00.
CDL/Truck Driving Training - Available at SWTJC in Uvalde and Eagle Pass, or at Star Career in Del Rio. These programs will prepare you to drive commercial trucks over the road or locally through training by experienced drivers using hands-on and classroom techniques. Classes run 160 hours and at the end you'll be ready to take your Class A Commercial Driver's License examination. Both programs offer job placement assistance after successful completion of the course.
CNA/Certified Nurses Aide - Available at SWTJC in Crystal City, this program provides 3 months of training in medical procedures, and will give the successful graduate the competency needed to work in a clinic or hospital, assisting medical professionals. [ A letter of Commitment to Hire is Required ]
Correctional Officer - The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has nearly 100 prison units throughout the State and employes around 2,800 correctional officers. If you want a good paying job, plenty of benefits, job stability, advancement opportunities and the chance to perform challenging and important work, a career as a Correctional Officer may be for you. To be considered, Eligibility Criteria is available, and that candidates must meet to be considered for training.
Technical-Vocational studies are intended to provide students with education and training and lead to employment after approximately one or two years of study and training. These programs of study are not intended for transfer to other training institutions or academies, or to institutions of higher education.
Work Opportunity Tax Credit - A federally funded program that is used to reduce the federal tax liability for private, for-profit employers who hire employees from one of the following targeted groups: TANF recipients, veterans, ex-felons, high-risk youth, and food stamp recipients.
On-The-Job Training (OJT) - Provides a unique opportunity for participants who already possess some job-related skills to 'learn as they earn.' By participating in training as an employee, the participant acquires new skills, while earning wages. The employer benefits by being reimbursed for up to half of the participant's wages for 6 months, while having the service of a full-time employee.
